We are dedicated to:

  1. Rescue: Saving cats in distress from shelters, streets, and unsafe environments.

  2. Rehabilitation: Providing medical care, nourishment, and emotional support to help them recover and thrive.

  3. Adoption: Matching each cat with loving, permanent homes that understand and meet their unique needs.

  4. Education: Promoting awareness about responsible pet ownership, spaying/neutering, and the importance of animal welfare.

  5. Community Support: Building a network of volunteers, foster homes, and supporters to create a compassionate community for cats and their caregivers.

Through our efforts, we aim to reduce the number of homeless cats, improve their quality of life, and celebrate the joy and companionship that cats bring to our lives.

Bennie's Story: A Journey of Rescue and Love

In May of 2017, I was driving home from Hawkesbury when I spotted a dog running along the fence at Highway 50 and Kilmar Road. He seemed lost, confused, and alone. Little did I know, this would be the beginning of a heartfelt rescue story.

When I got home, my neighbor was understandably upset. She told me her uncle had witnessed a man pull up, take the dog out of his car, and then drive off, leaving him stranded. Over the next few days, my neighbor, determined to help, would go down each morning to leave food and try to catch him. I took turns with her and would go down in the evenings, hoping to find a way to safely bring him home.

After 18 long days, we received a call from a local who said, “I have your dog.” My sisters-in-law and I rushed down to Kilmar Road, where we found him. He was in rough shape—underweight, covered in ticks, and clearly frightened. But despite his condition, he looked at me the entire time as we made our way up the road. I immediately called my brother and neighbor to let them know Bennie had been caught.

Though some locals expressed interest in adopting him, they weren’t sure about his temperament. It was clear to me, however, that Bennie was meant to be part of our family. I decided to adopt him, get him groomed, and give him a new chance at life.

The name "Bennie" seemed like a fitting tribute—it was my dad’s nickname, and I felt it honored the love and care I wanted to provide for this sweet dog. Bennie struggled with anxiety, but I was committed to helping him heal. We took him everywhere, including to the vet in Saint-Zotique, and I did my best to make him feel safe and loved every day.

Bennie may have had a rough start, but today, he is a cherished member of our family, and I’m so grateful to have him. His journey reminds us all of the power of kindness, perseverance, and giving a second chance to those who need it most.

Bennie is now about 15 years old.

Story from Allanna, founder of Sauvetage Bennie's Rescue.

You may also be wondering how the cat rescue came about. Well, Allanna has always had cats and she was helping a friend with her cats and realized how much there was a need for a cat rescue in the area.

She then asked a local pet store if she could start bringing cats in from her community to be adopted. The pet store was very adamant that the cats be rescued cats only. She charged people very little, some she knew had no money. So as the saying goes, many many cats ago. She had a contractor redo her barn into a Catio….and it’s snow balled from there.

She decided to name the rescue after Bennie, even though he was not a cat!
